Semiconductor giant AMD has announced a landmark agreement with OpenAI to supply advanced AI accelerators and systems that will power the next generation of OpenAI’s computing infrastructure. The multi-year partnership represents one of the largest hardware collaborations in AI history, positioning AMD as a key player in the race to deliver high-performance compute at unprecedented scale.
Under the agreement, AMD will provide OpenAI with up to 6 gigawatts of GPU compute capacity, beginning with an initial 1 GW deployment planned for the second half of 2026. The infrastructure will be based on AMD’s forthcoming Instinct MI450 accelerators — next-generation chips optimized for large-scale AI training and inference in hyperscale data centers.
As part of the deal, OpenAI has been granted an option to acquire up to 160 million AMD shares, equivalent to nearly 10 percent of the company, contingent upon the achievement of specific technical and performance milestones. The announcement sent AMD’s stock soaring by over 24 percent in early trading, briefly pushing the company’s market capitalization beyond the one-trillion-dollar mark for the first time.
AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su described the partnership as “a defining moment in our open AI strategy.”
According to Su, “Our collaboration with OpenAI will accelerate global access to scalable, energy-efficient compute within an open and flexible infrastructure that fosters innovation.”
The announcement follows AMD’s Advancing AI 2025 event, where the company outlined its vision for an open AI ecosystem spanning silicon, software, and cloud. AMD also introduced ROCm 7, the latest version of its open-source AI software stack, and launched the AMD Developer Cloud, enabling developers worldwide to experiment directly on AMD hardware via the cloud.
For OpenAI, the partnership marks an important step toward diversifying its hardware supply chain, after years of near-exclusive reliance on NVIDIA’s GPUs. Industry insiders report that OpenAI served as an early design partner for the MI450 architecture, providing feedback that helped AMD tailor its new accelerators for massive language-model workloads.
Analysts say the collaboration could generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD over the coming decade, firmly establishing it as the second major supplier of AI compute infrastructure worldwide. Yet execution will be critical — building and powering multi-gigawatt-scale data centers requires intricate coordination in chip production, logistics, and energy efficiency.
Beyond its immediate financial impact, the AMD-OpenAI alliance underscores a deeper industry shift: the move toward open, interoperable AI infrastructure capable of supporting rapid innovation.
