Axelera AI Launches 629-TOPS Europa Processor for Enterprise and Physical AI

The 5 nm inference accelerator combines eight AI cores with 16 RISC-V vector cores, onboard video decoding and a 45 W power envelope. Europa cards have been validated in Dell and Supermicro systems, although Axelera’s public material gives mixed signals on broad availability.

Axelera AI has launched Europa, its second-generation AI Processing Unit, extending the Dutch company’s architecture from edge computer vision into enterprise inference, generative AI and more demanding physical-AI workloads.

Manufactured on Samsung’s 5 nm process, Europa integrates eight second-generation Digital In-Memory Compute cores and delivers a claimed 629 TOPS at INT4, INT8 or INT16 precision within a 45 W thermal design power. The device also includes 16 RISC-V vector-processing cores for pre-processing and post-processing, allowing more of the application pipeline to run on the accelerator rather than on the host CPU.

The processor incorporates 128 MB of L2 SRAM and supports external memory bandwidth of 200 GB/s. An integrated HEVC video decoder is designed to reduce movement of video data through host memory, a potentially important feature for multi-camera analytics, robotics and other vision-heavy deployments.

Europa is being offered as a standalone device for customers designing their own boards and in two PCI Express products. The half-height, half-length Axelera Edge 232p carries one Europa processor, while the full-height, full-length Server 250p uses four devices for higher-density server installations. The Edge 232p supports 32 GB or 64 GB of LPDDR5 memory, PCIe Gen 4 x4 connectivity and active or passive cooling.

Axelera says the Edge 232p has been validated in Dell XE5 and Supermicro 111AD systems. The same Voyager software environment supports both Europa and the company’s first-generation Metis processors, giving developers a common route for compiling and deploying vision models, language models and complete inference pipelines across the two generations.

The launch also connects Europa to European AI-factory infrastructure. Dell, systems integrator E4 and Axelera are working on deployments supporting AI-factory projects in Italy and Luxembourg. The announcement nevertheless does not establish the final scale or timetable of those installations.

Availability requires careful qualification. Axelera’s launch announcement describes Europa as shipping, and a current Edge 232p product brief directs customers to place orders. The main Europa webpage, however, still invites customers to request early access, while several ecosystem partners describe evaluation or future integration rather than deployed production systems.

Axelera also claims substantial advantages in performance per watt and performance per dollar over competing platforms. The comparisons combine internal measurements with published competitor data and do not identify a complete set of test conditions for every platform. They should therefore be treated as vendor benchmarks rather than independent performance results.

Europa is a significant European semiconductor launch because it combines documented silicon, standard PCIe products and validation in established server platforms. The next proof points will be broad shipment availability and independent measurements of real models, memory limits, sustained power and multi-user inference performance.
