NVIDIA has announced strategic partnerships with photonics manufacturers Coherent and Lumentum to develop next-generation optical technologies aimed at scaling the architecture of AI-driven data centers.
The collaborations will focus on advanced optical components and modules designed to support ultra-high-speed data transfer between AI processors while improving bandwidth efficiency and reducing power consumption in large-scale data center environments. As artificial intelligence systems continue to expand—often linking thousands or even hundreds of thousands of GPUs—interconnect performance has emerged as one of the most critical challenges in modern computing infrastructure.
Through these partnerships, the companies will work on advanced photonics solutions, including optical technologies integrated closer to processors and within data center networking infrastructure. Such innovations are expected to enable faster and more efficient communication between processing units, supporting the operation of massive AI training clusters and industrial-scale “AI factories.”
According to NVIDIA, optical connectivity will play an increasingly central role in next-generation data center design. Moving from traditional copper-based interconnects to optical solutions is seen as essential for meeting the rapidly growing data and connectivity demands of large AI workloads.
The initiative reflects a broader industry shift toward photonics technologies as companies seek new ways to boost performance and improve energy efficiency in the data centers powering the global AI ecosystem.
