e2v image sensors launched aboard PerúSAT-1 Earth Observation Satellite

e2v’s high resolution image sensors have launched aboard PerúSAT-1, the Peruvian optical Earth observation satellite on a European Vega launcher from Kourou Spaceport, French Guiana. The spacecraft will monitor the Earth’s surface and capture high resolution imagery to support various activities of the Peruvian Government, including emergency management, territorial planning, oceanography, fisheries, forestry, climate monitoring, cartography, mining, geology, agriculture and hydrology.

PerúSAT-1, the most powerful Earth observation satellite operating from Latin America, has been developed by Airbus Defence and Space and will provide panchromatic and colour images of 70cm resolution. The high resolution images are captured by e2v high sensitivity, back illuminated CCD imaging sensors, using the latest generation of technologies including Time Delay Integration (TDI) and multi linear devices. The image sensors were integrated by Airbus Defence and Space into a very advanced silicon carbide instrument of the New AstroSat Optical Modular Instrument (NAOMI) family, enabling the satellite to take high resolution images for over a decade.

Anouk Laborie, Head of Detection in the Optical Instruments Division at Airbus Defence and Space, said, “The long lasting collaboration and the partnership established with e2v technologies on our NAOMI products line is a major asset for its success and for several other sciences; environment monitoring and meteorology missions using e2v sensors.”

Jean-Charles Terrien, Vice President of Space Imaging at e2v in Grenoble, said: “Thanks to more than 20 years of partnership on ground breaking programmes with Airbus Defence and Space, our teams have acquired a strong mutual knowledge which has led to high performance and cost effectiveness for the NAOMI instrument product family. e2v has a rich heritage of providing optical imaging detectors for a diverse range of missions including environmental monitoring, surveillance, mapping and meteorology, and this expertise is a major contributor to the high performance of PerúSAT-1.”
