GE Renewable Energy to supply new generators to Mottec hydropower plant in Switzerland

  • Refurbishment project is expected to increase power plant capacity from 69 MW to 88 MW
  • GE Renewable Energy will replace 3 generators in Mottec hydropower plant in Switzerland for Forces Motrices De la Gougra SA (FMG)
  • This deal strengthens GE’s position to the Small Hydro market.

Paris, 14 October 2016– GE Renewable Energy today announced it has signed a deal with Forces Motrices de la Gougra SA (FMG) for the replacement of the three horizontal motor-generators of the Mottec’s hydropower plant in the Wallis region, Switzerland.

GE Renewable Energy will engineer, manufacture and deliver the new generators to the power plant. The equipment will be designed by the GE Small Hydro Center of Excellence before being manufactured in the new Generator Factory, both located in Bilbao, Spain. The new generators will have a capacity of 37 MVA – compared to 29 MVA prior to GE’s project with FMG. The first generator is expected to be commissioned in 2018.

Yves Rannou, President & CEO of GE’s Hydro Solutions said: “GE’s teams are taking Hydro, everywhere in the world, to a new stage, bringing their assets to higher levels of performance. We are happy to work closely with Forces Motrices de la Gougra SA and to bring our technical knowledge and experience to their project. This deal strengthens our position to the Small Hydro market”.

The Mottec hydropower was commissioned in 1959 and is located in the Wallis region, Switzerland. It has a power output capacity of 69MW and generates enough electricity to power 130,000 homes. After GE’s work comes to completion, Mottec’s power output capacity will extend to 88 MW.

GE is a world leader in hydroelectric power plant both in terms of new plants and installed base, where the company accounts for over 20% of the world’s hydro facilities.
