Norway to introduce New Hydrogen Refueling Stations

A transportation convenience is set to be released this year by the Norwegian leading manufacturer H2 Logic: a new hydrogen refueling station.  An alternative to battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles have particular prospects as well as problems.

Hydrogen refueling stations can only service a few cars at a time, for starters, but the 20 upcoming H2 Logic stations promise to service at most 5 hydrogen cars at the same time.

The stations, which differ from H2 Logic’s current 25 hydrogen refueling stations in Europe, will provide 100 kg of hydrogen in three hours. This time, however, the spatially-conscious stations will produce hydrogen by using excess energy taken from energy positive buildings within close proximity.  For instance, NEL Hydrogen’s electrolyser will use solar power from nearby buildings to supply 200,000 kWh per year.

New facility features also include a smaller dispenser as well as a modular design that will allow H2 Logic to produce 300 facilities a year. The new powerful compressors and cooling systems enable the pump to be 50 meters away from accompanying station components.

Although the downside to hydrogen fuel cell cars is that the associated facilities are costly to build compared to battery electric vehicle stations (as much as $3,000,000 for one hydrogen refueling facility) the bonuses may eventually outweigh the negatives.

One positive feature, for instance, is that the stations may eventually become entirely convenient by location, as the fuel stations will be in major cities such as Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Kristiansand, and more.  Using Denmark’s approach, the hydrogen stations will be built and operated along with oil, energy, and gas companies.

H2 Logic’s station, in the meantime, will be next to popularly traveled roads in Kjørbo, located outside of Oslo in Norway. The network of hydrogen stations should be completed by 2020.
