CES 2016: Rohde & Schwarz presents new test solution for HDR-capable consumer electronics products

High dynamic range (HDR) is a spectacular technological advancement that makes the home theater experience more intensive and more realistic. This technology matches the picture’s luminance dynamic range to the perception of the human eye. With its R&S VTx video tester family, Rohde & Schwarz now offers a solution for testing the interoperability of the latest generation of HDR-capable consumer electronics products with HDMI 2.0a.

Rohde & Schwarz has developed a new module that transforms its R&S VTx video tester family into the market’s most comprehensive and flexible platform for HDMI 2.0a and HDR testing. The new module offers generator and analyzer characteristics for data rates of up to 18 Gbit/s as well as functions introduced with the new HDMI standard, such as scrambling. It is backward compatible with HDMI 1.4 and therefore replaces the existing HDMI modules in the product portfolio. It supports both HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2 and covers realtime protocol testing and compliance testing in line with HDMI CTS 1.4/2.0. The new solution gives users a test tool that can be used in various applications throughout the consumer electronics value chain.

All important tests are covered. The generator function can be used to edit the Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame specifically for HDR. It displays the enhanced extended display identification data (E-EDID) of the connected sink, including the HDR metadata block. It also permits the playback of customer-specific, uncompressed moving picture sequences. The analyzer unit provides suitable E-EDID and displays the Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame. HDR-CTS tests are available for both the generator and the analyzer.

Rohde & Schwarz is one of the first suppliers to provide test solutions for HDMI 2.0a, supporting the rapid introduction of HDR technology on the market. The concept for the R&S VTx family, which is based on software options and modules, ensures a safe investment. Future enhancements will be provided at an attractive price via software, and the modules can simply be swapped out. In addition to protocol tests, users can perform electrical tests on HDMI sources for debugging and precompliance purposes, and also analyze video and audio content. The platform’s versatile test capabilities simplify testing of consumer electronics products by eliminating the need for costly test setups with other instruments.

The new R&S VT-B2363 HDMI RX/TX 600 MHz module for the R&S VTS, R&S VTE and R&S VTC video testers is now available from Rohde & Schwarz. For more information, visit www.the-av-experts.com.
