Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today introduced the Renesas Cockpit Reference Solution, providing an out-of-the-box development experience for quick and cost-effective digital cockpit application design. Developed based on Renesas R-Car M3 system-on-chip (SoC), the Renesas Cockpit Reference Solution delivers a combination of production focused, module-level hardware and software developed by Renesas with additional software from Renesas’ automotive partner network to ease the burden of system-level design.
“Automotive integrated cockpit is a challenging space because the integration of so many different cockpit functions, such as multiple operating systems, a rich UI, Bluetooth, and navigation, requires significant system-level insight,” said Daniel Sisco, Senior Director of Automotive Systems, Renesas Electronics. “Leveraging Renesas’ deep expertise in both silicon and system-level design, our reference solution reduces the implementation burden, allowing customers to jumpstart their application development in a cost-effective way with production-focused hardware and software.”
Renesas will demonstrate the new Cockpit Reference Solution in Renesas’ booth C190 at TU-Automotive Detroit 2019, June 5-6, in Novi, Mich.

The new reference solution provides OEMs and Tier 1s a full white box baseline solution that can be customized to meet different application requirements. Based on the company’s high-performance R-Car M3 SoC, the cockpit solution is pre-configured to showcase hardware and software features for out-of-the-box development. Customers can then reconfigure, upgrade, or expand on the system to create tailored solutions that match their unique needs.
The solution is delivered as a transparent mixture of FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software), Renesas software and third-party software by key members of Renesas’ automotive partner network. OEMs and production partners can modify, change, and distribute the Renesas code to best fit the application design needs.
The electronic control unit (ECU) reference solution delivers a functional, high-quality baseline implementation for multi-function display cockpit applications. Renesas offers customers a full turn-key, automotive, LPDDR4 (Low power DDR4 memory) reference design to address the challenge of high-speed IO interface design, complete with design and test collateral. Once customers customize the PCB for their own proprietary feature set, the reference design allows them to quickly bypass the traditionally steep learning curve.
Delivered as source code, the software package enables users to jumpstart application design with no existing cockpit solutions or collateral required. The package represents a complete reference cockpit solution, including BSP (board support package) and drivers, operation system (OS), virtualization example, Automotive-Grade Linux example, middleware, and a full application layer.
