STMicroelectronics Showcases its IoT Development Ecosystem and Long-Range Connectivity Solutions at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2017

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) , a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, will show its STM32 Open Development Environment (ODE) for prototyping IoT (Internet of Things) devices, along with RF solutions that enable long-range IoT connectivity using LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technology at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2017 (April 19-21, 2017; Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan).

The high-value, no-cost STM32™ ODE offers a simple, fast, and robust way to prototype IoT devices, regardless of the scale of development resources. The highly featured development ecosystem consists of a broad range of STM32 Nucleo development boards for ST’s 32-bit microcontrollers, tens of different X-NUCLEO expansion boards equipped with motion sensors, RF ICs, NFC tags, motor drivers, ranging sensors, MEMS microphones, and more, and the convenient STM32Cube software development tool equipped with numerous code libraries. At TECHNO-FRONTIER 2017, visitors to ST’s booth can get hands-on experience with STM32 ODE and receive free Nucleo and X-NUCLEO boards. In addition, ST will also highlight STM32 ODE Function Packs for specific vertical applications that simplify code writing for developing systems equipped with multiple functions in cloud communication, networking, security, and sensing.

In the IoT, numerous nodes are deployed everywhere to detect the states of Things and to manage them, often at long distances. Long-range, low-power wireless solutions play a vital role in networking edge nodes that are deployed over a wide area. ST’s demonstration at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2017 combines Semtech’s LoRa® communication IC with STM32, to send data wirelessly to a gateway from a node that senses temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. With a communication range up to 30km, LoRa technology is well suited for building large-scale networks for smart meters, cargo tracking, animal management, remote and high-risk data collection, and other applications.

In addition, ST will introduce its latest sub-GHz transceiver (S2-LP), whose extremely high energy efficiency enables IoT devices to operate for up to 10 years without battery replacement. The transceiver’s ultra-narrowband operation allows highly efficient use of the radio spectrum and reliable data exchange over long distances using low-power signals. It is ideal for alarm systems, surveillance equipment and smart energy meters, as well as long-range radio links used to connect devices like remote sensors directly to the Cloud without a local gateway. The transceiver also enables connectivity to the Sigfox global network, which is being rolled out worldwide to provide a reliable cost- and energy-efficient communication solution.

To see all of these demonstrations, visit STMicroelectronics at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2017 (April 19-21, 2017; Booth No.6R-12, Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan).
