Intel Movidius Helps Bring Artificial Intelligence to Video Surveillance Cameras

Intel Movidius, the world leader in embedded machine vision technology, is helping bring artificial intelligence (AI) to video surveillance cameras.

Movidius participated in an announcement today from Dahua Technology USA in which Dahua outlined how it is using Movidius’ Myriad 2 Vision Processing Unit (VPU) technology to power select Dahua video surveillance cameras. These cameras will go beyond traditional functions such as monitoring and recording by offering advanced video analysis features, such as crowd density monitoring, stereoscopic vision, facial recognition, people counting, behavior analysis and detection of illegally parked vehicles.

Movidius technology is focused on delivering class-leading AI performance in ultra-low-power smart devices. Thanks to the Myriad 2 VPU, Dahua is able to run cutting edge Deep Neural Networks on the device itself, creating natively intelligent cameras that can operate with or without cloud-based compute resources.

“The new frontier for AI and machine learning is being able to deploy these technologies in real-world products. This means getting the power demand to a low enough level to be embedded right into the cameras themselves,” said Remi El-Ouazzane, vice president of the Intel New Technology Group and general manager of Movidius, in the Dahua announcement. “The Myriad 2 VPU delivers a tremendous amount of compute for deep neural networks while requiring less than a single watt of power – allowing Dahua to create some of the smartest products to date.”

Intel completed its acquisition of Movidius in November 2016. Movidius’ leading VPU platform for on-device vision processing combined with Intel’s industry leading depth-sensing solution —  Intel® RealSense™ Technology — is a winning combination for autonomous machines that can see in three dimensions, understand their surroundings and navigate accordingly.
