Nokia and Telecom SudParis join forces to show advantages of ultra-broadband networks to French municipalities

Paris, France – On the occasion of the inauguration of the ETOILE building on the Telecom SudParis campus by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, Nokia and Telecom SudParis join forces to develop the ‘Très Haut Débit’ (THD) platform hosted in ETOILE: an ultra-broadband fiber optic network to experiment and demonstrate the advantages of very high speed communications.

Nokia will assist Telecom SudParis in developing new applications to enable the future smart city concept which local authorities, enterprises and inhabitants of all French communities will be able to benefit from. For Nokia, the “THD” platform gives it a new partnership with a key player in broadband, lets it experiment with architectures and demonstrates the performance of the equipment and the variety of possible deployments to our partners and local authorities.

Based on their longstanding relationship, Nokia and Telecom SudParis will contribute to France’s broadband ambitions expressed in the government’s “Plan Très Haut Débit”. The program aims to bring ultra-broadband access to 100% of homes in France by 2020 via a mix of fiber and next-generation copper technologies.

Nokia is providing Telecom SudParis with its fiber access solutions, which are based on the market-leading ISAM FX platform. This enables speeds of 1Gbps for each connected user or device using GPON technology, and can easily extend to 10Gbps symmetrical with XGS-PON and TWDM-PON technologies. This high-capacity solution provides a base for the services and application innovation that will bring benefits to French communities.

On top of this platform, Telecom SudParis will carry out experiments and demonstrations of the equipment and different architectures, especially applied to remote medical consultation systems, 4K High Definition videoconferencing, real-time 3-D videogame streaming, network security, innovative mobile services on 5G backhauled over fiber, multicast 4K video, smart energy solutions including public lighting, hygrometry and the Internet of Things.

A universal, sustainable and secure ultra-broadband infrastructure helps communities bridge the digital divide and create a foundation for greater competitiveness. It brings broad social and economic benefits and creates opportunities for people to enrich the way they innovate, do business and share knowledge.

Christophe Digne, Director Telecom SudParis, said: “The THD platform is a prime example of our reference platforms that create strong links with the industrial world.”

Federico Guillen, president of Nokia’s Fixed Networks business group, said: “It is our ambition to help France and its communities develop a high-performance broadband network that is capable of helping boost the local economy, raise employment and prepare communities for the digital age which inevitably will affect everyone’s lives. Consumer and enterprise appetite for broadband continues to grow, and countries actively investing in broadband even in the most remote areas will be best positioned to compete in the hyper-connected global economy.”
