Nokia to provide Tele2 with Cloud Packet Core solution across entire Tele2 Group network to deliver mobile broadband, further prepare for 5G

Nokia will provide Tele2 with Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core solution in Croatia, followed by Sweden, the Baltic states, Austria, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan
·         Nokia’s Packet Core provides the flexibility, scale and performance to address the demands of mobile broadband evolution on the path to 5G

Espoo, Finland – Tele2 has selected Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core solution to transform its core network to meet growing customer demand for high performance mobile broadband services. Once deployed, the new generation mobile network will give Tele2 the flexibility, scale and performance necessary to support LTE consumer services on a larger scale, and further develop the foundation for 5G.

Tele2 is a European operator providing mobile services, fixed broadband and telephony, data network services, content services and global M2M/IoT solutions with approximately 16 million subscribers in Europe and Central Asia. Nokia’s solution will be deployed across the operator’s global network first in Croatia and followed by Sweden, the Baltic states, Austria, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan.

The advanced design of Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core solution will allow Tele2 to adopt an automated cloud networking and service operations model by providing resources whenever and wherever they are needed. The solution consists of the Cloud Mobility Manager and Cloud Mobile Gateway running on an open OpenStack(TM) Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) infrastructure and bundled with Nokia’s professional services and expertise.

Elements of Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core solution, including the Cloud Mobile Gateway, were recently assessed by theEuropean Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC) and put through the industry’s most stringent performance and scale test scenarios. In all cases Nokia’s gear performed with exceptional results, confirming it is ready for today’s large-scale deployment and next generation IoT and 5G.

Key facts:

·         Tele2 is addressing the bandwidth demand for LTE consumer services on a larger scale and laying the groundwork for 5G and advanced IoT solutions.
·         Nokia will deliver its full Cloud Packet Core solution based on Cloud Mobile Gateway  and Cloud Mobility Manager, including the EMS and Virtualized Network Functions (VNF) Manager.
·         The deal also includes Nokia’s Professional Services.

Basil Alwan, president of IP/Optical Networks at Nokia, said:
“Like all leading operators, Tele2 is building out its packet core network to address the growth of consumer mobile broadband and an evolution path to 5G. Nokia is a packet core innovator and our cloud-native solution will allow Tele2 to connect a greater number and variety of devices and deliver a broader range of services. We look forward to helping our customer transform its mobile network infrastructure so they can offer new services faster, ensure scalability and performance, and evolve with confidence.”
