Watly, Solar-Powered Computer that Provides Clean Water, Electricity and Internet

Watly is the world’s largest solar-powered computer, which provides clean drinking water, green solar power and internet connectivity.

In many parts of the world, access to clean drinking water and electricity is often a luxury. Unfortunately, this does not only lead to inconvenience. In fact, limited availability of clean water results in vast spreading of diseases and bacteria, taking millions of lives.

Watly is an invention by a promising European-based company, which could provide a solution to the problem. It is the largest solar-powered computer, which can provide clean water andelectricity to those who need it most. In addition to this, it also provides internet access. Watly has been under testing for the past three years, and it is now ready to shine.

The Watly system is 40 meters (131 feet) long, and uses a complex thermal technology. Essentially it follows a vapor compression distillation process, which treats sea water. It desalinates it, and at the same time removes pollutants and dangerous pathogens. On a daily basis, it can sanitize up to 5,000 liters (1,320 gallons) of water, for 15 years.

The system is also equipped with photovoltaic panels, placed on top, providing free electricity. All power, which is not used immediately gets stored in a 140 kWh battery. This can be used to charge electronic devices like laptops, or smart phones.

Watly also provides Wi-Fi connectivity, which provides a great mean for data transfer, like sms service, or sending videos and images. The router is 3G/4G with a connectivity range of up to 500 meters (1,640 feet).

The first official trial was held in a small village in Ghana, where Watly was a subject of an incredible popularity. The trial brought external funding of $2 million to the developers, and a couple of awards. The makers used this funding to further improve the technology, and bring it to a prototype stage.

Watly is currently going through its Indiegogo campaign. For the building of one Watly unit, which has only the water sanitation function, the company needs to raise $75,000. This will then be met by a philanthropist, who has expressed interest and made a commitment. In order for the company to build an entire system with solar panels and Wi-Fi, they will require $325,000. So, let’s help them.
