ABB’s GIS substations to strengthen power grid in Singapore

ABB substations enable SP PowerGrid to boost transmission capacity and enhance power reliability.

ABB has won an order from SP PowerGrid to supply four 66 kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations for the city-state of Singapore.

The project is part of SP PowerGrid’s continuous efforts to strengthen the efficiency and reliability of its transmission and distribution networks and to meet the growing demand for power in Singapore’s industrial, commercial and residential sectors.

As part of the turnkey contract, ABB will design, engineer, supply and install the GIS substations, which include state-of-the-art control and protection systems as well as ancillary equipment. The scope also includes the replacement of aging equipment at two existing facilities to strengthen the national grid by increasing capacity and enhancing power reliability. The contract is scheduled to be completed in 2018.

ABB’s GIS technology will benefit SP PowerGrid by reducing their substations’ footprint, as compared to that of conventional air-insulated switchgear (AIS). This technology will also increase the substations’ power capacity, allowing SP PowerGrid to cater for future demand.

“We are pleased to support SP PowerGrid in strengthening its power infrastructure to sustain network reliability and to meet increasing demand for power,” said Claudio Facchin, Head of ABB’s Power Grids division. “In line with ABB’s Next Level strategy, we remain committed to delivering enhanced customer value by leveraging our leading-edge technologies and project execution expertise enabling a stable and efficient electricity supply to millions of consumers.”

Singapore Power (SP) Group is one of the largest corporations in Singapore and a leading energy utility group in the Asia Pacific region. As an owner and operator, the group provides electricity and gas transmission and distribution services in Singapore and Australia, and district cooling in Singapore and China. Singapore Power’s electricity grid is rated among the world’s best performing networks based on international benchmarks.

ABB is the world’s leading supplier of air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels up to 1,100 kV. These substations facilitate the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum environmental impact, serving utility, industry and commercial customers as well as sectors like railways, urban transportation and renewables.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leading global technology company in power and automation that enables utility, industry, and transport & infrastructure customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in roughly 100 countries and employs about 135,000 people.
