Nokia and Bell Canada launch terabit-speed metro network performance to support consumer and business customers

Ottawa, Canada – Nokia today announced the deployment of its most powerful IP core network router, the next-generation 7950 XRS (Extensible Routing System), with Bell Canada. This deployment bolsters the network capacity of Canada’s largest telecommunications provider to ensure its wireless, residential and business customers receive the data speeds and reliability they need today and expect tomorrow. The deal was won by Alcatel-Lucent, a subsidiary of Nokia.

The 7950 XRS delivers highly scalable and reliable transport and access technology that enables Bell’s customers to share and access video, multimedia and other data faster than ever before. Furthermore, the 7950 XRS can handle multiple terabits of data per second to the gigabit connected home and the cloud connected enterprise.

Delivering 32 terabits per second switching capacity, Nokia’s powerful core router also supports Bell Canada’s operational efficiency while maximizing the capabilities of its IP network.

Among its many broadband network applications, the 7950 XRS supports Bell Canada’s massive Gigabit Fibe Internet infrastructure project, which has already delivered Canada’s fastest Internet service to approximately 2 million homes in Ontario, Québec and the Atlantic provinces.

Key facts

  • Bell is Canada’s largest telecommunications company serving the broad communications needs of consumers, businesses and government with Fibe TV and Internet, wireless and data centre services.
  • Nokia is providing Bell Canada with the 7950 XRS – to be managed by Nokia’s 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) – to create a single, end-to-end managed IP platform streamlining day-to-day network operations and enhancing operational efficiency, including a reduced energy footprint.
  • The 7950 XRS addresses the needs of any size of network operator through a complete and robust set of Layer 2 and Layer 3 service features, and cost-efficient scaling from 6.4 to 32 terabits per second in a single system.
  • The 7950 XRS supports advanced management interfaces that will help Bell Canada reduce overhead costs and provide the agility and programmability needed for Software Defined Networking (SDN).

James Gilmore, Vice President of Wireline Technology and Engineering for Bell Canada, said: “Nokia’s 7950 XRS core router aligns with Bell’s strategy to lead investment and innovation in Canada’s broadband network infrastructure, providing us with the network capacity, scalability and efficiency to continue delivering world-leading network performance to our consumer and business customers.”

Alex Giosa, Head of Canada Market for Nokia, said: “Speed, flexibility and reliability are all essential requirements of today’s metro core networks to support the phenomenal rise in data-, video- and cloud-driven content. With up to 32 terabits per second switching capacity, the 7950 XRS allows Bell Canada to deliver blazing fast Internet to customers and meet its growing IP traffic demands for years to come while also keeping operational costs low.”
